Belarus' draft forestry development program for 2021-2025 under review

12.11.2020

MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) - The draft state program "Belarusian Forest" for 2021-2025 is undergoing approval procedures by government agencies, BelTA learned from the press service of the Forestry Ministry.

“Work on the draft document started at the beginning of the year and involved all stakeholders. The responsible customer is the Forestry Ministry. About a dozen different proposals and remarks were received during the public discussions of the draft program. Some of them were taken into account in the final version of the document,” the press service noted.

The state program aims to improve the system of forest resources accounting, to develop a system of forest reproduction and management with a view to preserving the biodiversity and increasing resilience to the adverse effects of the climate change, ensuring sustainable forest management, developing the market for forestry and logging services, and developing the infrastructure for the use of small-scale wood.

The implementation of the program is expected to help increase the woodland area to 40.3% of the total territory of Belarus and the logging volume to 3.2m3 from one hectare by 2025. The average planting stock is projected to increase to 225 m3 per one hectare. Under the program, the population of moose should account for 100% of the optimal number, red deer – 34%, and roe deer – 80% by 2025. The output of paper and cardboard is expected to grow by 2.1 times, pulp by 1.7 times, panel products by 1.1 times. The program also provides for boosting furniture output by 1.3 times (in actual prices) over 2020. Plans are in place to build at least 580.3km of new forest roads.
